We attended a seminar on peer debriefing. It was very informative and we hope to be able to use our new skills to help others as needed. Peer Debriefing is a time set aside to allow someone who has gone through a traumatic or disturbing experience the chance to talk about it. You give them a safe, confidential environment to share in and assure them that their feelings or reactions are normal and help them on their way to recovering from the incident. It is not counseling. Studies show that if people have the chance to talk about and process their experiences, they recover from the incidence more quickly. In missionary life there are many stressful things that people may go through like robberies, break ins, purse or wallet snatching, public transport hold ups, confrontations with anti-government groups, deaths of close friends, political unrest, and the list goes on. Our hope is to be available if anyone wants to talk.
